Fixing Your Car A Hassle? Use These Ideas

By Fred Gagnon

Auto repair is a topic of vital importance to countless individuals, but also one about which large numbers of people have insufficient knowledge. In order to ensure proper auto repairs at all times, a bit of education is needed. Study the tips and advice below, and you will be ready for any situation that may arise.

Brake

Familiarize yourself with the dashboard of your car. Your dashboard should display five different kinds of warning, including the check engine light, oil pressure warning, an alternator warning, a temperature warning and a brake warning. Learn to recognize these different lights so you can easily identify what needs your attention.

You must read your owner's manual to find out what types of fluids (oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, steering fluid) your car needs and to understand how to check and fill these up alone. Keep several bottles of each fluid in the trunk of your vehicle in the case of emergencies.

Apart from standard tire changing equipment, have a plastic tote stuffed with DIY auto repair equipment in the back of your vehicle in the event of emergencies. Fill it up with approximately a quart each of motor oil, transmission fluid, steering fluid, and brake fluid and a gallon of water. Place in a can of penetrating oil spray, a roll of duct tape, twine, bungee cords and important tools to be able to handle small repairs while traveling.

Do not be run over by your very own car! As soon as you jack your car up, don't forget to set your emergency brake. Put bricks at the rear of the tires you are not working on to help keep your car from going. Have a set of wedges or couple of bricks in the back of your car degrees of training to alter a flat tire on a hill.

Always bleed your brakes after repairing them. Pump your brake fluid afterwards. Make sure there aren't any leaks making you lose useful brake fluid. Then test out the car on a road that has very little traffic. Begin your drive out at a gradual speed and whenever things are all sure to be in working order, kick the speed up a notch or two.

Don't let your trip to the mechanic turn into a bad experience. Your car's life is on the line, so why not do everything you can to make sure it survives? The only way to do this is to use the above advice. You'll get the best mechanic and the best auto repair service possible.
