Turning From A Gas Powered To Torqeedo Electric Outboard

By Debra Cooley

Torqeedo electric outboard is just the perfect item for those days when you need a quiet ride downstream to your most treasured fishing spot, as opposed to a gas-powered one. With this, you will realize that the maintenance cost is significantly lower. It is also important to note that maintenance is not always necessary when you are operating it.

The gas powered outboards are usually very easy to operate due to the fact that they are able to provide a high mileage. Regardless of this fact, they pose grave danger to the environment as well as having a pretty higher maintenance cost. A much cheaper solution is to convert an old gas powered outboard to an electric one, rather than considering purchase of a new one.

Apart from changing the muffler, you may also consider replacing your old one with another that functions electrically. However, the latter one is considered the best alternative. Below are the steps to be followed when carrying out the conversion.

First, switch off the gasoline powered outboard. With the aid of a screwdriver, unscrew its casing. You will then be required to utilize a wrench to unbolt that gas tank and then raise it up.

Next, remove the bolts from the motor and separate it from the engine. Following this, remove the bolts from the pistons and cylinders. Take out the gas motor and replace it with the electric one in its position.

The drive shaft and the motor should be fixed together ensuring proper alignment, but only after the electrically powered outboard has been fixed. The tips should be placed perpendicularly to one another. Once you try turning the drive shaft, the same should happen to the motor.

You can now set the motor in place by bolting it firmly. Unscrew the control panel after unscrewing the wires from the sockets pull them out and lift up the control panel. You will require a 300-amp for replacing the control panel and then fix the wires as earlier on. The battery sockets need to be pulled out from the engine and the case bolted back on.

You will now be required to drill a few holes at the rear of the boat on the engine bracket. Drill should tree in total; at one end of the leather strap and two more, one on each side of the rack. The strap end should then be fixed to the left side hole by bolting it.

Position the six batteries by each other's side and cover them tightly with the strap. You should now bolt the strap into a drilled hole. Next, the outboard and the engine are attached by bolting them together.

Having bolted the outboard, you now need to connect the positive wire originating from the left cell to the negative part on the right side. Likewise, connect the negative area of the wire to the negative socket. The batteries should all be arranged in a sequence. Eventually, connect the positive socket from the controller to the positive(+) wire from the right side battery. Having finished all these steps, your Torqeedo electric outboard is now ready to take you down the river for fishing.
