Improving A Truck's Gas Mileage

By Jone Carducci

Fuel is an expensive commodity and the price seems to go higher and higher all the time. However, drivers have no other option but to purchase fuel unless their vehicle is powered only by electricity. Fuel economy is indeed an important consideration especially for diesel truck owners because their large trucks require a great amount of it. Let us discuss some ways on how to cut fuel cost and gain an overall improvement in gas mileage.

Car manufacturers or truck dealers usually give a specific factory setting or tuning to trucks that are purchased directly from them. This can greatly affect the fuel economy, horsepower and torque. The default factory setting does not allow one to gain all of the potential power of an engine. You may be surprised because this setting can only give you half of its performance and this may feel very underwhelming. However, truck owners can get all that they can out of their diesel engine with the help of modifications and upgrades done with their respective trucks.

You can give a significant difference in your torque and horsepower often by as much as 50% by buying an aftermarket turbocharger and this is one of the many additions that one can make. You can give your engines a considerable boost in horsepower without greatly affecting its weight. This is a much needed feature that will increase the truck's speed without compensating its mobility giving it balance. You may notice that car handling becomes very rigid when the weight of the truck substantially increases. Adding a water methanol injection system is recommended if you choose to add a turbocharger.

Upgrading your exhaust system is also an excellent idea and it has many functions. It collects exhaust gases gathered from all cylinders of the engine and releases them through a single opening. It also helps in making the engine sound peaceful while running and at the same time converts unspent fuel into usable one. These upgrades can definitely improve your engine flow. There are many types of diesel exhaust parts and diesel exhaust kits to consider and it's wise to do some research before you add any of these items to avoid wasting your money.

An easy-to-install upgrade that allows you to adjust your computer and move beyond factory settings is done with the help diesel tuner or also commonly known as a programmer or chip. Such methods can be done to increase fuel economy and this is considered fairly easy and inexpensive.

There is no doubt that money is involved when talking about truck upgrades. However, these upgrades proved to be very beneficial in the long run because a gas-powered engine can't compete with a diesel engine with its life span. You can have a lot of value with your money if you purchase diesel trucks today. There is still a need though to maintain all parts of your truck carefully especially when making upgrades even with the engines remarkable life span and this is absolutely essential. You can avoid having further problems in the future by adding special gauges to your diesel trucks. Regularly replacing the filters is also advised to keep your engine and truck working at its best.
