4X4 Mudding Has Everyone Becoming A Kid Again

By Wayne Allen

A sport that has been getting a lot more attention, both for doing and for watching, is 4x4 mudding. Some people just think of it as a fun hobby while others can get fairly serious about it. In either case, it's an opportunity to enjoy playing in something most of us haven't done since we were kids: mud.

All it really takes is a truck that you want to drive through mud. Although any truck can be used, people will usually alter them somewhat to make it easier for them to make it through the course. For example, the suspension of the vehicle may be altered and the engine power boosted.

While the alterations are intended to keep the truck from getting stuck, this does happen often. This is the time when people other than the driver get to enjoy themselves by helping to get the truck unstuck. The winner, however, is the driver who can make it through the farthest before becoming stuck.

There usually isn't a prize for winning, other than getting to brag about it. Some mud racing organizations exist that will pay more attention to the wins and losses but typically it's just a bunch of people getting together to drive through a muddy field. If necessary, they may even make their own track by adding water.

Although the event is usually fairly casual, custom building and repairing the vehicles can become expensive. The truck itself can make a big difference in how well the driver will do. Driving skill is very important also and the more practice drivers get, the more their likelihood of being successful.

You may not be ready to invest in a truck especially for 4x4 mudding just yet. But it could be worth checking out some weekend if you haven't seen it for yourself yet. It's a sport has been gaining in popularity all over.
