By Allan Bigarda

If you have just passed your driving test you will probably feel confident in your driving abilities. But how much do you remember about maintaining your new car? Some regular checks and simple maintenance will improve the safety of your vehicle and reduce the cost of servicing. These healthy engine tips provided by Lincoln Park Auto Repair Company will show you how easy it is.

During the practical test you should have been asked to describe how to check the engine oil level. If you are unsure or have forgotten how to do this then read on as low oil levels can cause serious damage. Luckily this is a really quick and easy process.

Start by running the engine to let the oil heat up. Driving for five minutes will accomplish this. Park the vehicle on a level surface to ensure the measurement is correct. Before opening the hood wait for a few minutes to let the engine cool down.

Now remove the dipstick from oil tank and wipe it clean with an old cloth. Take a note of where the minimum and maximum levels are marked and replace it in the tank. Remove it once more and check the level of the oil. Any where between the minimum and maximum is fine.

Something else that anyone can and should check is the coolant. This liquid is pumped around the engine to keep it cool. It is recommended to check the coolant twice a month and before any long journey. If there is not enough coolant overheating will occur which can cause serious damage.

Remember to let things cool down before opening the hood of your car. The coolant is kept in a small transparent tank with two levels marked on it. The liquid should be visible through the walls of the tank. These two healthy engine tips provided by Lincoln Park Auto Repair are easy to perform. If you do them regularly you will be safer and save money in the future.
