Different Types Of Crimping Lugs

By Ashis Jain

Crimping lugs are an important part of crimping systems for power carrying conductors. Crimping lugs are designed to have efficient mechanical strength and electrical conductivity to enable them perform their function. Crimping lugs are of different types in order to be used for varied uses.

Lugs are usually of different types depending on the materials used to manufacture them as well as their shape. In terms of the materials used for manufacture, there are copper rig lugs that are made of wrought copper. These lugs are electroplated thus ensuring abrasion and corrosion is prevented. They are also useful for both commercial and industrial applications.

You can also find aluminium lugs. These ones are preferred mainly because of their high conductivity. These lugs are quite similar to the copper lugs since they are also provided with electroplating for prevention of abrasion. This electroplating is beneficial since it ensures that they last a long time.

You may also find pin type lugs that are readily available in the market. These lugs are similar to the other types with the main difference being that instead of being circular on the end where they are to be fixed on a particular area, they have a pin. This pin therefore is usually inserted into a material and not tied around like the copper ring lug. These lugs are the best for use in the electrical industry since they are resistance to corrosion; thus, making them very efficient. In order to meet the varied needs of users, these lugs have varying diameters.

There are also the tubular lugs that are also used quite frequently. They are the most suitable as in-line connector for wires that may have different cross sections. Manufacturers make use of electrolyte copper to make these tubular lugs, and they are coated with tin that is essential in preventing oxidation and ensuring resistance to corrosion. You can find tubular lugs available in different types and sizes to meet your varied needs.

You are also likely to find in line connector lugs. These lugs are very efficient in the fast transmission of electrical cables. They are advantageous since they offer varied levels of sealing, damage protection and strain relief.

The fork type lug is the other type of crimping lug that is commonly used. As its name suggests, this type of lug looks like a fork on the side that is to be attached on the appropriate place. Fork lugs are usually the most efficient in transition connection of circular aluminium wires and copper terminals of different electrical equipment.

You can also find insulated lugs in the market. Most people who prefer using these types of lugs do so since they are known to be durable and reliable. Insulated lugs are usually the most efficient when wiring switches as well as electrical outlets to mains. Some of the different types of crimping lugs may have crimping terminals that can be quite useful in ensuring that the cable inserted in the lug is firmly fixed.
