Purchasing Used Vehicles From Their Current Owners

By Cindy Quera

When purchasing anything that costs a substantial amount of money, it is certainly prudent to consider all factors that affect the sale before you do spend a single cent. This is particularly true when the "anything" you are about to buy is a used auto.

Used cars that are sold by current owners or private sellers need to be subjected to more careful investigation and scrutiny because although they are doubtless more affordable, these vehicles do not come with the same level of guarantee or certification than the used cars you can buy from an established dealership. If you want to find the difference between price and information on used cars sold in dealerships and those sold by owners, you can simply try searching here. But if you really want to go for a used car being offered by its current owner, better check out a few helpful tips to save you some money.

First of all, you need to understand that you will be purchasing these cars on an "as is" basis from their owners and this is a very important thing that you need to keep in mind. Unlike the used autos sold in companies, such as Hertz Car Sales, you have no way of telling how well the car was maintained since you are buying from a complete stranger; you do not even know how well the previous owner drove the car or if he drove it frequently, at all.

To make sure that you are not going to spend thousands of dollars buying someone else's problems, have your own mechanic check the car and take it for a test drive so you would get professional advice on whether or not you should buy the car.

It would also be a good idea to do a little research on used car values and prices before you check the car you are interested in. It is important that you investigate on the vehicle's actual value so you would be well informed and able to negotiate properly for the car.

This research on car values and prices will also help you find out if the sellers are overpricing the car. You also need to stay away from a car that has a lot of 'improvements' on it since owners have a tendency of adding a lot of features to the vehicle, thinking that it would help them sell it for more money; why should you pay for their unnecessary add-ons? Always have at least a couple of cars and sellers that you can compare with each other to help you find the most affordable deals.
