The Function Of A Slope Indicator

By Marlene Blevins

Slope indicators and meters fall in the same class of gadgets. They are both used for determining the steepness of an area. All people who measure the inclination of surfaces, buildings, and other items find a slope indicator to be a very useful device. Normally the device is meant for application in areas with rough and rugged terrain or landscape.

When the right installation procedure is followed to install the device on motor graders or related machines, it provides accurate values for the steepness of land being graded. When installing, the device should be set in parallel to the machine it is installed on. This implies that the machine must be on a flat surface at the time of installation. To be accurate in the measurements, it is advisable to take readings over a large distance.

Modern devices look good in the place they are installed because they are brightly colored. The viewing range of the scale is also very wide. Scales are marked from 0 to 50 degrees on either side. Danger zones are shown on the gadgets by red colors to show that they are danger zones. Normally all readings beyond the 35th mark are considered danger zones.

Rectangle-shaped cutouts are made at the bases of devices that are not meant for installation on machinery. The cutouts act as points of attachment on poles. The user is also provided with a means of holding in some devices by larger cutouts. Bases are concave-shaped for attachment on skis and related platforms. Light-weight devices are made to make it easy to carry them for long hours that workers need them in the field.

Slope indicators range in size from small hand-held devices to large units. The size depends on the purpose for which the gadget is meant. Latest models have a very high level of accuracy to ensure that perfect slopes are constructed. Accuracy is measured in degrees and is normally within a degree. The response time in most accurate models is below one second. Since the equipment is used in rugged conditions, it is designed in a way to ensure accurate readings in snowy, rainy, and dusty environments.

The casings that enclose the circuitry of the products are manufactured from different materials. Aluminum, plastic, alloys, fiber, and steel are among the materials used in making cases. The rate of doing work is highly improved if the gadget is used in the right way. In fact, one can even work in places with poor visibility or at night provided they have the product installed.

The user is able to take readings in a single glance because most gadgets are calibrated in huge numerical scales. Balls or pointers are used to show readings by resting on the values. Some pointers take a few seconds before settling on the reading.

The cost depends on factors such as accuracy, size, response time, quality, manufacturer, and scale. The price ranges from a few dollars to several hundreds of dollars. Purchases can be made from local stores, shopping malls, licensed dealers, or on-line stores.
