Self-Driving Cars Are Coming

By Cornelius Nunev

Self-driving automobiles will be a reality by 2020, according to previous General Motors research and development chief Larry Burns. Before an audience at the University of Michigan's Robotics Day, Burns envisioned the not-too-distant time when fleets of driverless vehicles will transport people wherever they need to go, then right away travel to the next destination to serve someone else.

No more crashes from distracted driving

The emissions in urban cities will decrease quite a bit with driverless vehicles because there will be fewer vehicles on the road. People will not get distracted, which will mean fewer accidents on the road. Distracted driving will become obsolete; people will be able to do whatever they want in the car, such as taking care of business and phone calls.

Google blazing the trail

Radar and video cameras are put into the driverless automobiles to be able to detect road dangers or stop signs. They position the vehicle on the road very well. Google has gotten a ton of attention with its test drive of driverless vehicles. It has used Prius and Audi TT models to test drive the system on public roads. In fact, Google has already test driven the program for thousands of miles.

Because of a separate human driver, there was one accident while the driverless system was active. Drivers can take over the system in the car at any point.

GM tried it once

The "Boss," or a self-driving Chevrolet Tahoe, was partly released in 2007 by General Motors. The car was entered into a 55 mile race supported by the United States DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). The driverless system won the race with its cameras and radars keeping it on the road, according to Automotive News.

Awesome system

On the self-driving automobiles, there will be adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance and lane-keeping technology. Although Burns believes the self-driving car will not come out until 2020, he does believe that these benefits will be seen on most consumer automobiles by 2015.

Leap for insurance

Insurance will be one of the biggest difficulties that must be overcome for the driverless automobiles to work. Security regulators and insurance businesses will have trouble figuring out fault in the case of an accident if both automobiles were driverless automobiles.
