Safety Precautions When Handling Tower Cranes

By Leslie Ball

It is common to find tower cranes being used at constructions sites. These machines help to lift heavy loads to the desired levels efficiently. While they add convenience to the operations, they also pose risks to the people on location and other property. The risks can be reduced if precautions are observed by all concerned. Apart from destruction of property, accidents from refurb rough terrain crane can result in the loss of lives. The company handling the project may be forced to compensate those who have been affected by the accident.

The first thing one need to do is to ensure that all the people at the site are competent to handle the work that is required. The people operating the cranes should show certificates proving their training and competence. In many cases, such people are required to have their skills certified by government authorities. People who do not have the right papers should not be allowed to handle the machines.

There should be one source of command at the site. All activities should be well coordinated to avoid any collisions. This can only be achieved if there is a supervisor who coordinates the activities of all the other people. It is the role of the supervisor to ensure all the activities are being done at the right time. Everyone on site should obey the instructions of the supervisor.

The site must be inspected by safety experts occasionally. These experts will offer their own suggestions regarding the safety of the site after inspection. They also train the workers to ensure their level of awareness is improved. This process should be continuous as there are many new challenges that will be encountered in the course of the work.

Workers on site should be made aware of what they need to do in order to avoid accidents when they are at work. This may require taking them for training when necessary. All workers on location should wear appropriate gear as specified by the supervisors. Proper lighting should be provided if work has to continue at night or when visibility is poor.

Operating tower winches involves following predetermined procedures. The operators should fully understand all the procedures. Retraining them may be necessary whenever new operating procedures are introduced. Incompetent operators should not be allowed to handle the equipment. The guidelines are not aimed at limiting the operators but to ensure safety of all on site.

There are many causes of accidents during a construction project. One of the causes is the use of faulty equipment. All the machines should be taken for inspection regularly. This helps to identify faults in them that might lead to more serious problems. When the defects are identified and addressed in good time, the operations of the project will not be affected.

Loose tools and other components should be secured while being hoisted to upper levels of the construction. This is necessary to avoid them falling off and injuring people on the ground. Other properties being used on the project can also be damaged by the falling items. Every worker should be on the look out for possible dangers and alert the supervisors for proper action.
