The Tow Truck And How It Operates

By Linda Sanders

It is so unfortunate that in each day, accidents are reported everywhere across the globe. Some are caused through careless driving while others are beyond explanation. No matter the cause for the situation, the issue must be addressed immediately through the rescue of survivors, putting the dead bodies onto body bags and making through investigations into the scene. The vehicles may need to be carried away from the scene to pave way for investigations. One way to succeed in that is by the use of a tow truck.

It is believed that the breakdown machine was invented in 1916 by Tennessee based worker named Ernest Holmes. His main duty was to move the blocks using ropes during the building and construction. In the event, he learned to develop a truck which was later to be re-designed into what it is today.

Motor carriers may share common function with the breakdowns but the difference is the ability to multitask. These trucks have the capacity to hold many cars and vans of different measurements in weight. They mostly come in handy in the event of a mechanical damage or when the vehicle has been disabled.

Breakdowns are categorized into three different models. First one is the boom breakdown. It is mostly used to lift vehicles that are trapped in gulleys and ditches. The metallic yoke is placed onto the bumper of the vehicle to lift it up.

Another type of truck is known as the hook and chain. The vehicle has a hook and chain attached to it, just as the name sounds. It functions by dragging a vehicle using hook. Most experts do not advocate for this kind of breakdown because of the way it operates. Dragging a vehicle using its bumper will lead the vehicle to more damages. That is why they are mostly used during car accidents.

The third type of truck is known as the flatbed breakdown. Judging from the name, they are characterized by an empty bed-like feature on the back of the truck. The vehicle is driven to top of the flatbed. Consequently a winch is used to drag the vehicle to a specified position. Thereafter, hydraulics can be used to level out the bed in order to haul the vehicle.

Most of these trucks are quite popular in the government and private sectors. In most cases, motor vehicle companies owned by non-governmental organizations use the flat bed to ferry their vehicles to their specific destinations. The government trucks come in handy in cases of accidents since the medical experts and the detective needs to investigate before making their final judgment.

Before making a decision on the kind of breakdown one needs, it is important to know their functions. Most of them are used to drag and transport vehicles from one place to another. However, one cannot deny the fact that most motor vehicle companies would like to use the flat bed to ferry most of their vehicles. On the other hand, it is the responsibility of the government to move vehicles that have been involved in road carnage to pave way for investigations.
