Sourcing And Buying Vintage Harley Davidson Parts

By David Jones

Most motorcycle riders will often need to buy and replace certain components. If you own a modern machine that is still made this will be a case of visiting an auto spares shop and buying what you need. For those who own older bikes, trying to find Vintage Harley Davidson parts can sometimes be a lot more difficult and in some cases extremely expensive.

A couple of options are available to you when you are trying to find spares for a classic or older model. Searching for some spares can be a time consuming process and in some cases the parts cannot be found. Before you start to try and hunt down rare items it is good practice to take a photo of the old one so that you can compare it to the replacement.

A good starting point to find spares is on the internet sites that now specialize in vintage parts. A large number of these web sites have thousands of items in stock from early model bikes to recent ones. Their page listings will feature pictures and descriptions as well as prices and there will be some contact details so that you can speak with them.

Harley dealerships are also a good place to visit when searching for rare items. Most dealers will have huge stocks of new parts and many will have older spares which are not listed in their stock books. In the event that they do not have what you are searching for they can often advise you where to continue looking.

Scrap dealers are also a good place to go on a hunt for hard to find items. Many motorcycles that have been taken off the road can be found piled up in junk yards. Many of these companies will strip the bike down and put the spares on shelves ready to sell but it is worth taking along some basic tools in case you need to remove components from a scrap bike.

A Harley Davidson owners club can also be a great place to find vintage spares that are unavailable elsewhere or discontinued. A lot of club members who have collected spares for years often have stocks parts that they will sell and trade with others. You do not have to be a paid up member to buy from them but it is a good idea to join and they will help you out if they can.

After locating the spares for your vintage bike it is a good idea to retain the scrap ones as they may just need repairing. This can help other people looking for rare spares as you can sell it on or trade it. Items such as petrol tanks, brakes and suspension components should always be inspected by a qualified motor mechanic after repair to ensure they will operate safely.

It is always better to try and fit factory made spares to your bike if possible. Re manufactured parts can be used and they will function well but they can reduce the value of your classic bike. It is also worth taking into consideration that a lot of owners clubs and show associations will not let you enter your bike into a show if it is not fitted with genuine Harley parts.
