What To Know About Custom Mud Flaps

By Roger Hall

Mud flaps are also called mud guards. As the name suggests, they are flaps attached on a vehicle to provide protection to the vehicle, other vehicles, passengers, and other road users from flying debris. The debris is thrown into the air by tires as they rotate. Debris varies in size from small pebbles to sizeable rocks. Custom mud flaps usually work in combination to the vehicle fender.

A wide range of materials can be used to make mudflaps. Superior qualities of rubber make it a favorite material in this application. Other materials in wide use are various kinds of plastics, metals, and polyurethane. The material used is usually flexible and highly resistant to damage when it makes contact with the road surface, tires, and flying debris. Soft materials would cause debris to be impregnated into them when the two make contact.

It is not only vehicles that these products are installed on. Motor cycles and bicycles also commonly have them installed. Due to lack of great speed and big debris in bicycles, plastic is often the material of choice. Motor cycles use stronger and larger products because they move faster and can throw bigger debris. This is the reason why stronger material like rubber is used on motor cycles.

Installation onto the vehicle is done using different methods. In vehicles, aluminium brackets are commonly used to secure and maintain the device in place. Besides the use of aluminium brackets, bolts and rivets are also used. However, the use of rivets is not very wide. In bicycles, these devices are held in place by other parts and bolts. The flexible part of the device is usually attached to an inflexible parts usually made of metal.

Installation of mudflaps is done at the back of the tires directly blocking the way of flying debris. Each flap covers one tire. In some applications, two rear tires are covered by a single flap. Such flaps are huge in size and have texts written on them. This is more common in trucks in the logistics industry.

There is great variance in the size and shape of mudflaps and one can choose according to their preferences. There are big products that swipe the ground and some people prefer those ones. Large products are meant to be more cosmetic than functional. Other people prefer the small hard-to-notice products. Most products come in rectangular shapes, but square and other customized shapes are also possible.

Mudflaps are usually sold without decorations. However, the buyer has the option of adding decorations such as artwork and texts. If the vehicle is owned by a company, the company logo may appear on the mudflap. Some have and continue to use them to advertise products, services, or businesses. Toyota and other car manufacturers also sell mudflaps printed with their logos.

Other customizations that may be included are light-emitting diodes, LEDs. The LEDs may remain constantly on or may be turned off by the driver. Regulation of mudflaps varies from one state to another. Regulations are meant to ensure that the products prioritize functionality even if they are used for other purposes.
