Steps On Building The Street Rod Frames

By Carl Brooks

Street rods are types of cars that are old and these are being manufactured with increased performances. Cars that are newly manufactured are not installed with cadillac engines so that its speed will be faster and also to outperform the older hot rods. Automakers who have manufactured the cars would prefer to offer fuel efficiency and safety than performance.

Just like how buildings are being made, building the frames for cars can never be different. So in this article, you will be provided with the simple steps on building street rod frames. The primary materials that you will be needing are the frames or the steel tubing, sand blaster, and air tools. When doing this, it is also important for you to have even the basic knowledge about mechanical things and hand tools.

There are a lot of companies that are offering a complete package of chassis in which you can assemble. You may use a rusty chassis from old cars and if you have this already, it would be easy for you to perform the next steps. But before, you must first have to decide on what type of rod you will be making. Generic frames or any other bodies can be used if ever you have a low budget.

So after you have decided on the rod, be ready now with the frame or the steel tubing. The generic frames will need more work since these are needed to be modified first. Those brackets and mounts that will not be used should be cut off then disassemble the rear axle assembly and front suspension. Measure all the sides and check if it is a square.

If you may happen to see or notice some weak points, weld it immediately. It is also important to weld the front and rear cross members. Mostly, the builders would prefer on boxing all kinds of frames. The term boxing means welding the flat steel plate. The plate is the length of the entire frame on opening edges inside. Boxing is not needed for a steel tubing in a rectangular type.

Purchasing a kit for the front suspension can improve the proper functioning of front suspension. Once the suspension is decided, using the suicide style, mount it underneath the cross members. Suicide styles are often utilized for lowering the cars more. Steering boxes would turn pitman arms that would push tie rods back and forth. Boxes should be mounted properly in correct angles.

To install a rear suspension can be done easily. The suspension need springs and also other materials for holding it in position. Leaf springs are the very common types but may not possibly work to some types of vehicles like the early and small ones.

If the chassis is already installed with four wheels, start on fitting the body and try sorting out how it will sit. Then after, mount the engine. There are many types of mounts that can be used. The easiest type are the side pedestals and front cradles, but these front cradles will need support at the center part. The transmission need cross members that are bolted in.

After the engine has been mounted, focus now on the details of brake, clutch pedal, and gas. Decide if these are to be mounted on firewalls or under the floor boards. If these will be mounted under, the frame brackets should be welded.
