What One Needs To Know About Slope Meters

By Marlene Blevins

The construction of true slopes is sometimes needed in certain applications for various reasons. Slope meters are the gadgets that are used for such constructions. They are fixed on various machines such as graders, which are employed in leveling lands into slopes of various angles. The precision that can be achieved from using the device allows work that would otherwise need to be done during daytime to be done at night.

Contractors avoid moving more soil layer than necessary using the device especially when they are paid for work done. The rate of working is also improved when one uses the meter. Areas with a lot of snow, rain, and dust present no problems to the devices. Tight seals are used to protect the interior of the product from unfavorable working conditions.

These devices are placed in various groups. Main groups are safe indicators commonly called curve speed, steep slope meter, and slope-meter no 2NS, no 1, and no 2. Most crown and slope constructions are done by products in group No 1. Steepness is shown by figures printed in the calibrations. For exampled a ration of 6 to 1 in the steepness is shown by 8 on the scale.

Small triangles incorporated in the devices represent degrees and serve reference purposes. Bulldozers and motor graders are some of the machines category No 1 devices are used on. Devices in category No 2 find use mostly on crown work. They are calibrated in hundred 0.01 to 0.16. They are also used to determine percent of grade apart from being used on crown work. Some among the machines they get installed on include wheel ditchers, motor graders, asphalt pavers, and tunneling machines.

No 2NS category gadgets are readable with one look because their scales are printed in large numbers. The indicator tubes are big too. These gadgets have large scales because they are used at a distance from the operator. The machines on which category NO 2 NS and 2 are used on are the same.

Safe indicator is the device used to determine safe driving speed on curves. When the vehicle is on a leveled land, the indicator rests on the zero mark. However, the indicator can move up to an angle of 25 degrees on either side depending on how tilted the vehicle is. Danger zones are indicated beyond 10 degree on either side of the scale using a red color.

Steep slope meter is used where readings of very steep terrains need to be taken. The calibration on them is in percentage of grade. Most calibrations range between 0 to 50 percent. These models are installed on motor graders, bulldozers, and such like equipment. All the devices given above can be independently replaced. As such, manufacturers also make separate replacement parts.

Quality, material, accuracy, and the manufacturer are some of the factors that influence the price of a device. Most products are designed in a way that they maintain a high level of accuracy in all work environments they are utilized. Cases are constructed from plastics, aluminum, and steel among other materials.
