The Characteristics Of A Good Slope Indicator

By Betty Williams

Air transportation is the fastest way for a person to travel between distant places. This is especially if these places are separated by large masses of water. The actual process of executing air travels is quite complicated. It requires not only highly trained personnel but also very effective means of sharing information. Slope pointers are lighting mechanisms used to send quite a wide range of information to the pilot without verbal interference. The traits of a proper slope indicator are highly crucial.

Due to the vast nature of information that must be shared, several kinds of pointers have to be deployed to ensure that each and every piece of data is sent and received in time and also prevent confusion. In this sense therefore, a good number of illumination mechanisms were developed and placed strategically at the airport. This allows the control panel to effectively play their role of plane management.

When the plane has approached the airport and is seeking to make a landing, the glide angle is very crucial. This is not information that can be gotten from the system controls. The pilot simply has to focus on the visual approach indicator. This illumination system is positioned in line at the sides of the runway. The projected illumination varies between white and red basing on the glide angle of approach.

The precision approach path indicator is also another category of runway management lighting. This device is made up of up to four separate lighting systems. These lamps are aligned perpendicularly to the path of approach. Normal procedure stipulates that they should be situated at the left side of runway. Their purpose is to determine proximity of glide slope of plane. It uses a combination of white and red illuminating to direct the pilot accordingly.

Small and other special kinds of flight modules usually have no ascension or descending angle determination mechanisms. This makes it hard for the pilot to effectively align them with the pathway while seeking a safe landing. For this reason, heliports, air-parks and 139 airports are equipped with a special box known as Pulsate visual approach gradient indicator.

The tri-colored VASI is a technology that has fallen out of use in recent times. It was designed to indicate either red or green depending on the ascending or descending properties of plane. A mixture of these colors however provides an amber result that most pilots misinterpreted as a sign of wrong inclination. This made them to react un-accordingly. Due to incidences, the system was put to halt.

Another crucial airport control crew function is the manipulation of carrier activities. Without knowledge on the location of plane before landing however it is very hard to properly allocate carrier services especially for busy airports. Stabilized glide gradient indicators are designed to create a beam upon plane approach. This beam varies in color to indicate location and urgency for these services.

The t-visual indicators have the highest number and are designed to have a varying visual effect on the pilot in accordance with their point of runway approach. These lamps are placed at the sides of pathway in a crosswise format. When at the right approach to the runway, the point will see a T-formation on the ground.
